Solana Vista School hosts Newbery Medal-winning children’s author Matt de la Peña

Solana Vista students and staff were excited to host New York Times bestselling, Newbery Medal-winning author Matt de la Peña on Oct. 21 at Solana Vista Elementary school.

De la Peña’s newest picture book released in August 2022, Patchwork, with art by New York Times bestselling illustrator Corinna Luyken, is a celebration of the endless possibilities contained within every child. Solana Vista’s Student Council led two assemblies where de la Peña read and discussed Patchwork with students, including a question and answer session at the conclusion of each presentation. Solana Vista’s learners have been studying de la Peña’s growing collection of children’s picture books such as Last Stop on Market Street, Carmela Full of Wishes, Love, and Milo Imagines the World.

The school was decorated in student-created art including paper-patchwork quilts, Mexican papel picado banners, and “Love is…” suncatchers; all art pieces are connected with de la Peña’s literature. Each student at Solana Vista received a signed copy of Patchwork to add to their home libraries thanks to partnerships with the Solana Beach PTA and Dad’s Club, The Book Catapult independent bookstore, and individual contributions from families.

De la Peña won the 2016 John Newbery Medal for his second picture book, Last Stop on Market Street. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. A San Diego native of National City and Cardiff-by-the-Sea, de la Peña first began writing young adult novels before adding picture books to his portfolio. He teaches creative writing at San Diego State University, and travels the country for speaking engagements and to share his books at schools and colleges. Learn more about Matt de la Peña at mattdelapena.com.

“To say our students are excited is an understatement,” remarked school principal Katie Zimmer in a news release prior to the event. “The opportunity to meet and engage with an award-winning author will have a lasting impact on our children as readers, writers, and citizens in our society.”

**TIFF: Best Movies That Won the People's Choice Award, Ranked**

The Toronto International Film Festival has been known to show some of the season’s best upcoming films for years. Established in 1976, TIFF has become one of the biggest film festivals in the world, and its prizes are considered prestigious. But if there is one thing to note about TIFF, is that it offers a great indicator of what movies are going to be considered the hottest to hit theaters and screens across North America and the world. The People’s Choice Award specifically has become one of the most coveted prizes in the festival, and there is solid reasoning behind that.

The award is given to the film said to be the most popular with the festival audiences. There is a big catch about this, though: many of the films that have been selected for this award went on to receive Academy Award nominations. What is even more shocking is that quite a few of the films even went on to win an Academy Award. The People’s Choice Award is now considered to be an early indicator of what movies are going to be major Oscar contenders. 2022’s winner at TIFF was Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, so time will only tell if that lands awards buzz later on. Until then, these are the best movies that won the People’s Choice Award.

The Imitation Game

Benedict Cumberbatch brings one of his best performances to the table in The Imitation Game, which tells the story of the forgotten Alan Turing. Turing, who worked for the British government during World War II and decoded German messages, was a genius that created the Turing Machine — a model for modern computers. The Imitation Game moves through Turing’s life as a bullied teenager and how he makes the machine come into existence. Although he was doubted, he managed to make it happen and overcome the roadblocks put in his way.

American Beauty

Sam Mendes debuted with American Beauty in 1999, making quite a statement about the career and path he was going to follow as a director. The movie stars Kevin Spacey as an executive amid a midlife crisis. Despite being married to a teenage daughter, he falls in love with the daughter’s underage best friend, making a stunning commentary about middle-class life in suburban America. The film becomes even more shocking under the context of Spacey’s recent controversies, but, in 1999, American Beauty made quite the splash.

The Fabelmans

Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans took home the People’s Choice Award in 2022, beating out other popular movies anticipated in theaters. The Fabelmans is based on Spielberg’s own life, and its protagonist is a young filmmaker named Sammy looking to make it big in the film industry. Set in Arizona after World War II, the movie follows Sammy as he grows up and discovers more about the world around him, including some family secrets. The film becomes a medium in which he helps understand the world, proving how cinema has powerful, prolific messages as an artistic and creative tool.

La La Land

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling starred in La La Land, which can be considered a visually beautiful homage to life in Los Angeles. Stone is an aspiring actress looking to make it in Hollywood, while Gosling portrays a jazz pianist struggling to make it in this city. The two originally meet in a moment of road rage but cross paths again when Stone’s character runs into him as he gets fired from a job playing at a restaurant. The two then begin a relationship full of passion and life, leading them to discover how they can follow their dreams and cherish the fleeting moments together.

Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit made its world premiere in 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival, making quite a statement for director Taika Waititi. Jojo Rabbit is about a ten-year-old growing up in Germany during World War II. He is an active member of the Hitler Youth, but one day he discovers that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. Jojo must confront the beliefs he was indoctrinated with as he meets a real Jewish person that is not what the propaganda says they are like, while, at the same time, adopting an innocent persona about the war going on around them. However, that innocence must come to an end eventually.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Ang Lee made his mark with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which starred Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-fat, Zhang Ziyi, and Chang Chen. Despite the film being in Mandarin and its genre wuxia, it was a massive hit globally. Set in the 1800s, during the Qing Dynasty, a swordsman and his friend run a security company. When a famous sword called “Green Destiny” is stolen by a masked thief, this sets off a series of events that lead to them trying to track down the thief. Like many wuxia films, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is an epic story in its scope, making it no mystery as to why it was successful.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri swept the Oscars the year it came out, and took home awards at most of the major award ceremonies in some capacity. Frances McDormand stars as a Missouri woman whose daughter was raped and murdered, but nothing was done about it by law enforcement. She takes matters into her own hands and rents three billboards to make the case more public, but the local townspeople and police are upset that she did this. There is a path to justice by the end, and Three Billboards is a moving piece that is honestly unforgettable.

****Ironheart Saved Iron Man - But She Might Doom the World***

The following contains major spoilers for Iron Man #24, available now from Marvel Comics.

Tony Stark has always been one of Marvel's most ingenious heroes, and the past few months have seen him prove that time and time again. Rather than lashing out or launching any sort of full-scale assault against his latest enemies, Iron Man has instead embarked upon a campaign to dismantle the maniacal Source Control with cash. Unfortunately, the most dangerous of all of Source Control's assets have continued to elude him, although they have landed a lot closer to home than Tony initially believed. In fact, it is another armored hero who now wields the Mandarin's Ten Rings, even if Ironheart might not be able to do so as successfully as she hopes.

In the face of yet another heartbreaking betrayal, not to mention the apparent death of James Rhodes, aka War Machine, Tony Stark has managed to maintain an eerie level of calm. As seen in the pages of Iron Man #24 (by Christopher Cantwell, Angel Unzueta, Frank D'Armata, and VC's Joe Carmagna), this is due in no small part to having been prepared for both of these outcomes. What he had never even considered was for none other than Riri Williams to be the one inside the Cobalt Man's menacing armor. With her help, he and Rhodes would be more than able to turn the tables on Source Control's minions, though that doesn't mean she is willing to work alongside them in the way Tony had hoped.

Ironheart Has the Mandarin's Rings

While Tony has worked tirelessly to amass every single piece of Source Control's vast arsenal, Riri has instead focused her efforts on acquiring the Mandarin's Rings specifically. Initially, Tony is beyond grateful for the help, though that sense of gratitude soon becomes a concern when he realizes she intends to keep the impossibly powerful artifacts for herself. As someone who has fought against the power of the Mandarin's Rings, Tony knows all too well how destructive and corrupt they can be. Riri has spent her entire life watching such power wasted and she simply can't afford to let them go.

From her first appearance in 2016's Invincible Iron Man #7 (by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato Jr.), it was painfully clear that she was destined for something similar to the greatness Iron Man found before her. As an MIT student, Riri created her very own power armor, and the very next year she would debut it as Ironheart. In the years since she has proven herself to be just as capable behind a suit of armor as she is in any lab, yet superheroics were only ever supposed to be the beginning of what she set out to accomplish.

Ironheart Won't Hand the Mandarin's Rings Over to Iron Man

As she explains to Tony, handing over the Mandarin's Rings would mean giving up on using their power for good. Not only has she spent countless hours working out how to use them to provide humanity with answers to its greatest woes, but Riri also has the determination to make that happen. This is certainly endearing, so much so that Tony can't help but acquiesce to her once the line has been drawn, but it is also indicative of precisely what he is worried about.

Even if Riri can control the Mandarin's Rings without being influenced by them in any overtly harmful manner, she may not be able to keep herself from losing sight of how dangerous that kind of power is. Much like the time Tony spent racing Korvac for the Power Cosmic, Riri could very well be setting the Mandarin's Rings up to be the next great treasure for the world's worst supervillains. Should her ambition get in the way of the need to safeguard the Rings she now possesses, Riri might even become the world's next biggest problem without ever realizing there was something to worry about in the first place.
